About Doc2Markdown

Doc2Markdown is a document conversion workspace. You upload a file, the conversion service turns it into Markdown, and you edit, preview, copy or download the result — all in one place.

Why Markdown

Markdown is plain text, so it is easy to diff, version, search and store. It moves cleanly between documentation sites, static site generators, note-taking tools, wikis and code repositories, and it is a convenient input format when feeding written content into other tools and pipelines.

How it works

  1. 1. Upload. The browser validates the file extension and size (50 MB maximum) before anything is sent.
  2. 2. Send. The file is posted as multipart/form-data to POST /api/convert on the server.
  3. 3. Convert. The server parses the document server-side — PDF text extraction, Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, CSV and HTML — and returns clean Markdown.
  4. 4. Work with the output. The frontend shows the Markdown in an editor with a live preview, and lets you copy or download it.

Architecture

The frontend is a React + TypeScript application. Conversion runs entirely server-side; no conversion happens in the browser and there is no mock or fallback output. By default the app uses its own built-in conversion API, and you can point it at an external converter service through the VITE_API_BASE_URL environment variable. The app checks GET /api/health to report backend availability.

Supported formats

  • pdf
  • docx
  • pptx
  • xlsx
  • xls
  • txt

Conversion quality depends on the source document; complex layouts may need manual cleanup in the editor.
